Waitematā Station (Britomart) Newsletter

Kia ora neighbours,

This month's newsletter features:

Station names confirmed

We are so excited to share the news that our proposed station names have been formally adopted following the statutory application process with the New Zealand Geographic Board Nga Pou Taunaha o Aotearoa.

The names are as follows:
  • Maungawhau Station (previously Mt Eden Station)
  • Karanga-a-Hape Station
  • Te Waihorotiu Station
  • Waitematā Station (currently Britomart Station until CRL opens)
The names were gifted to the people of Auckland by CRL’s Mana Whenua Forum and CRL Ltd together with Auckland Transport formally applied for these names to be adopted in May last year.

We couldn’t be prouder of the outcome – stations with names that are steeped in history and rich in cultural heritage, that more accurately reflect the cultural narrative of the areas they will serve – which is also mirrored in the designs of the stations themselves.

Works in the station

At the western end of Waitematā Station (Britomart) the team has completed Mechanical, Electrical, Fire, Hydraulic (MEFH) works with minor civil works remaining.

Progress on the smoke screen structure continues and is now ready for the glass panels to be installed. The scaffolding set up by the smoke screen works is planned to be removed by the end of April. After the scaffolding is removed, the remaining screening and terrazzo works will be completed.

As well as installing cable trays at the eastern end of the site, the architectural fit out is also progressing (for example adding doors and windows). MEFH works are progressing well in the tunnels and rail system rooms.

Meet the team - Jose

Name: Jose Manuel Fernández Hernández
Company: Link Alliance
Title: Waitematā Station Health & Safety Manager

My role is to assist and contribute in the project's safe completion. I work to ensure the project complies with safety procedures and standards while maintaining strong relationships with the construction team, subcontractors, and stakeholders.

I've been working as a health & safety professional since 2001 in a variety of industries across several countries and continents (Spain, United Kingdom, Uruguay, and New Zealand).

I used to play in Real Madrid's lesser teams when I was younger, and it showed me the importance of never giving up and battling for the goals that you set for yourself. These are the ideals that I carry with me every day of my life.

Join us on site next month

With most of the work happening underground at Waitematā Station (Britomart), it can sometimes be hard for neighbours to fully get a feel of the scale of the project and progress being made.

No better way to find out what's going on, than to see it with your own eyes. If you, your neighbours or colleagues would be interested in coming on site next month for a personal tour please let us know by emailing info@cityraillink.govt.nz.

Britomart Place works

Surface Works

Paved area back to public use
The area around Britomart Place continues to transform. As each stage is completed, hoardings are being moved to reveal more open space for pedestrians.

Following the weather delays in February, Martinus and their contractors have now laid tar seal, new concrete, created decorative raised garden planters, and completed the sunken garden. The canopy structure has also been fully repainted, and new cube planters placed along the kerbside.

This month, important pipe upgrade works were undertaken from out the front of Les Mills round to Beach Road. These were completed on schedule, and we appreciate local business and pedestrian patience as we finished off these works.
Gardens established awaiting seasonal planting
Raised planters reformed adjacent to the Martinus site office (previously the Chinese restaurant).

Tunnel works - South wall construction

Martinus tunnel works are all complete following the flood delay from the cyclone. The last of the works were to complete the blockwork safety alcove, which have been finished on time and handed back to Auckland Transport.

Platform changes in Waitematā Station

Progress to Platform 1 was hampered at the start of March following the effects of the cyclone and delayed the concrete pour programme for a week.

The Martinus team have worked tirelessly to get this back on target with the stages of new track building and track slab being established. This included new drainage controls being applied, so it is ready to be reopened in March. Hoardings have also been removed in readiness for Platform 5 works.

Waitematā Station (Britomart) sees thousands of passengers pass through daily, and amidst the station plaza’s bustle sits LOCALITO Convenience.

Managed by Yousef for the past two years, you can be sure to be welcomed with a warm smile. Localito caters to all your snack and convenience needs, and we’ve definitely spotted our own City Rail Link teams wandering through.

Originally from Jordan, Yousef now lives in Auckland and has successfully managed not one but four convenience stores across Auckland’s city centre.

Drop in and say hi to Yousef at Localito Convenience – open 10am – 3pm, 7 days a week!

Rail Network Rebuild - Stage 2

Stage 2 of KiwiRail’s Rail Network Rebuild (RNR) started on Monday 20 March 2023 and will run until January 2024.

RNR is an essential upgrade of Auckland’s rail network. When this work is finished and CRL is open, Auckland will have more reliable rail services, more frequent trains and faster journeys.

When a section of the rail network is being worked on, AT’s trains can’t run in that section – this is to ensure the safety of people working in the rail corridor. Trains will continue running on all other parts of the network.

RNR Stage 2 is from Monday 20 March 2023 until January 2024

  • Sylvia Park, Panmure, Glen Innes, Meadowbank and Ōrākei stations will be closed.
  • Eastern Line trains will run between Manukau and Waitematā (Britomart) at peak times using the Southern Line (via Newmarket). At off-peak times trains will run between Manukau and Ōtāhuhu.
  • Onehunga Line trains will run between Onehunga and Penrose at peak times. At off-peak times trains will run between Onehunga and Waitematā (Britomart).

AT will provide new Rail Replacement Bus Services and express bus services, and increase the frequency of two existing bus services to help customers complete their usual journeys.
