Kia Ora

Happy New Year from the Karangahape Station team! We hope that you had a relaxing and restful time over the holiday break.

Construction at our Karangahape sites is back into full swing after the festive period with another big year ahead for the project. This year we will achieve the following and more:

  • Completion of excavation for the station boxes and mined tunnels
  • The Beresford Square Station box will be connected to the mined tunnels beneath – almost 35-metres below ground – the deepest point on the project
  • The final breakthrough into the station as Dame Whina Cooper makes her final drive towards Aotea
  • Start of the above ground station building at Mercury Lane around mid-2022
  • Start of the above ground station box in Beresford Square, towards the end of the year.

Strict guidelines remain in place for the works to ensure the safety of our people and the wider community, with New Zealand’s recent move to the Red setting in the COVID-19 traffic light system.

As always, if you have any questions please contact us at Karangahape@linkalliance.co.nz or call 0800 CRL TALK (0800 275 8255) and press option 4.

Ngā mihi,

The Karangahape Station Team

Dame Whina Cooper completes her first drive

On 23 December 2021 our Dame Whina Cooper Tunnel Boring Machine (TBM) broke through at Aotea Station.

This was a landmark moment for the project as it signalled the completion of the first tunnel and connected all three Link Alliance stations: Mt Eden, Karangahape and Aotea.

This month the team at Aotea commenced disassembling the TBM’s cutterhead and shield (front section) and began trucking them back to Mt Eden Station. There, they will be reassembled to begin the second tunnel, scheduled to begin in April of this year.

Click here to watch the cutterhead being lifted out of Aotea Station by an impressive 450-tonne crane.

The team at Aotea are running TBM Thursdays, which gives you an opportunity to see the TBM from a distance before it returns to Mt Eden in late February. You can book tickets here but please note spaces are limited to 50 people per session. Vaccine passes and masks are mandatory.

Watch the latest station build progress

2021 has been another big year for us and though not much looks different above ground, there has been tons of progress made beneath our feet.

Jonathan Hill, Karangahape Station Manager, headed underground to show how the tunnels are shaping up, the work currently underway and what to expect over the year ahead.

Meet...Anna Guise, our new Sustainability Advisor

What does your job at the Link Alliance entail?
As Sustainability Advisor I am looking for ways in which we can make the construction and operation of the City Rail Link as sustainable as possible. This includes looking at how we can minimise the waste we generate, the energy and water we use, and considering the materials we are building the project from to try and find ways to produce the smallest carbon footprint possible. My team are also responsible for ensuring the project is in line with the requirements of the Infrastructure Sustainability Council’s (ISC) IS rating framework.

Where did you grow up?
I grew up in rural Suffolk, England and moved to Aotearoa New Zealand in 2019.

Where were you working prior to this?
I was working remotely on a few rail projects in Australia, including the Melbourne Metro. I was also working with KiwiRail on the network upgrade for the Wellington Metro.

What do you do when you are not working?
I like being outdoors as much as possible, so I do a lot of hiking and cycling. I also enjoy gardening and the Auckland climate is so great for growing veggies. This year I have sweetcorn, tomatoes, chilli and zucchini, growing in pots at home.

Any fun facts about yourself you want to share?
I do a lot of sewing and in a bid to be more sustainable and stop buying new fabrics, I’ve started repurposing old fabrics into new clothes. My favourite top is made from a pillowcase!

From Auckland to the UAE

A familiar name to the Beresford Square – Haser - is currently representing New Zealand at The World Expo, taking place in Dubai.

The World Expo is a festival that takes place in a different location every five years, and showcases the culture, businesses and innovations from countries around the world.

Expo 2020 Dubai (October 2021 - March 2022) currently has 192 participating countries, including New Zealand, who each have their own pavilion. Haser is on the entertainment and cultural programme scheduled for the New Zealand pavilion which includes performances by Six60 and choreographed shows by Parris Goebel.

Haser is among the Kiwi street artist collaboration at Expo Dubai 2020 currently producing a live street art piece over five days (27-31 January).

You may remember in our November newsletter we shared our beautiful artwork installation on Beresford Square created by Haser.

Calling all street performers!

If you, or someone you know, is a regular busker or street performer, there’s another cool spot for someone to showcase their talents.

The Pocket Park, on the corner of Karangahape Road and Pitt Street, is the ideal spot to head down and play some smooth sounds or put on a show for the passing public.

If you require a power supply to perform, please contact the team at Karangahape@linkalliance.co.nz or call 0800 CRL TALK (275 8255) and press option 4.

Please ensure that you abide by the city’s street performance and busking rules to avoid disturbing our neighbours during this tough period.
