Work that began with hand-held spades in the ground four years ago came full circle with us celebrating the end of work to shift one massive pile of dirt and then replace it with another at the project’s Maungawhau Station site.

Maungawhau Platform Time lapse

Launch of NZ Music Month at Te Waihorotiu

A first-ever never to be repeated performance. To help launch NZ Music Month, Aotearoa singer and beatmaker Geneva AM became the first ever artist to perform on the City Rail Link underground platforms.

Ventilation Underground

Ventilation systems are under installation across the project - from huge fans to control dampers. These clever systems do everything from keeping temperatures in the tunnels cool, to assisting in emergency operations, to providing fresh air in the stations.

Sky Elements at Maungawhau

Designed by iwi artist Tessa Harris, the sky element feature is one of four separate elements that tell the design kōrero of the Maungawhau station building. The sky element is made of triangular shingles of three colours and reflectance levels.

CRL completes tunnel track laying

We have completed installation of the second and final railway line below the central city.

The newly laid 3.4 kilometres of track will carry trains underground north from Maungawhau Station at Eden Terrace and connect with the two new central city ones – Karanga-a-Hape and Te Waihorotiu – and downtown’s Waitematā Station (Britomart). CRL’s southbound line was installed last year.

The focus for 2024 shifts to train testing and the fit out of the stations and tunnels, alongside landscaping and urban realm enhancements. The fit-out programme includes the installation of lifts, escalators, security systems, CCTV, electricity, signalling and communications.
