Kia ora koutou

We hope you and your families are keeping safe and well. This month, we are pleased to announce that we will again be hosting our fortnightly community information sessions.

This week we restarted our public drop in information sessions at our site office on 97 Mt Eden Road. These sessions are held on the first and third Tuesday of the month between 4.30pm-6.30pm and are a great opportunity to speak to the Link Alliance team and to learn more about the CRL project and our Mt Eden works specifically. We welcome you all to join our next session on Tuesday 21 July 2020.

If at any time you need to contact the Mt Eden Station team for any reason, please phone 0800 CRL TALK and select option five or email mteden@linkalliance.co.nz with any queries.

Stay safe and keep well,

The Mt Eden Station team

Mt Eden Station closure

From 11 July, Mt Eden Station will be closing until 2024. This is to enable the Link Alliance to construct the new Mt Eden Station and City Rail Link connections to the Western Line. While we know it will be an inconvenience, closing the station is the only way to guarantee both public safety and safe working conditions for the construction team.

The current access points to the station – the ramp to and from Mt Eden Road and the pedestrian level crossing between Fenton and Ngahura streets – will close permanently.

During the weekends of 11-12 and 17-19 July when the trains are not running on the network, Auckland Transport (AT) will begin the process of removing operational equipment such as power and signalling cables, and later all of their fittings, such as canopies, lighting and seating, from the station’s platform. To perform these works, an AT-led team will be accessing the platform via our construction site and using a crane to remove their assets from the platform.

The remnants of the ramp and platform will be dismantled by the Link Alliance later this year, and we will send out a notification once a date is confirmed.

Alternative travel options

Once the station is closed, you’ll need to use an alternative route if you catch the train to or from Mt Eden Station or use it as a walking connection.

A new frequent 64 bus service started operating on 5 July, ahead of the closure. It provides an alternative to train travel between Mt Eden, Kingsland and Newmarket. The 64 bus service will be free during CRL construction.

If you normally catch the train to Mt Eden Station and then the bus into the city centre, you can also do this from nearby stations, Grafton and Kingsland. Western Line trains will run as usual but they won’t stop at Mt Eden Station.

Photography exhibition on Nikau Street

This year, the Link Alliance and CRLL are proud sponsors of the Auckland Festival of Photography. As part of the festival, an outdoor exhibition has now been installed along the Mt Eden Station construction site hoardings at the bottom of Nikau Street.

The photographs displayed are a selection of those taken for the Nikon Auckland Photo Day 2020 competition and from the festival’s unique archive of 14,000 photographs taken by Aucklanders over the last decade.

We hope that this partnership between the Link Alliance, CRLL and the Auckland Festival of Photography showcases some of the talent we have in our city and makes the hoardings more appealing to our neighbours.

New Ngahura Street site access & wheel-wash

As part of our consent conditions, a dedicated site entry and exit point is required for the movement of our plant and heavy vehicles. From this week, Ngahura Street will be the main site entry and exit point.

To minimise the amount of soil leaving the site on the wheels of trucks and to keep local roads cleaner, the team have built a wheel-washing station at the Ngahura Street site exit. Check out the team using the wheel wash below.

Utility services diversions underway

Utilities diversions are well underway across the Mt Eden construction site. From next week, the team is planning to start the relocation of a wastewater pipe that currently sits within the site near Shaddock Street and connects to a manhole near the intersection of Korari and Nikau streets. The pipe needs to be moved out of the way ahead of CRL tunnel portal construction works commencing.

Along Mt Eden Road, the team are working to divert and install utility services on Mt Eden Road bridge. Over the past few weeks, trenches have been dug along the footpaths outside 28 and 97 Mt Eden Road to move the services in order to widen Mt Eden Road bridge. The bridge will be widened to allow for the rail corridor to be widened so the new City Rail Link line can integrate with the existing Western Line.

Over at Porters Avenue and Wynyard Road, utility services will be diverted this week to prepare for the construction of the new Porters Avenue overbridge which is proposed to start later this year. This work will begin with investigations along the footpath to further inform us about the exact locations of underground services. Once the utilities investigations are completed, we will start excavating along the footpath and road to begin the process of relocating the services.

Later this month on Ngahura Street we will carry out the relocation of a number of power lines to make way for the tunnel boring machine’s delivery onto site later this year. The works will involve digging trenches to relocate the power lines underground. This  will take place over four weeks while Vector completes their work and during this time several on street carparks along Ngahura Street will be temporarily removed. Once the utility relocation work is complete the team will begin the process of moving the power poles and reinstating the road.

Life Church demolition

Starting next week, we plan to start demolishing more of the former Life Church building at 95 Mt Eden Road. The team will remove the remaining roof structure and the front of the building using diggers and a crane.

The remainder of the building will stay in place until later this year when work begins on the new Mt Eden Road bridge, which will be built alongside the existing road-over-rail bridge to accommodate the new east-bound City Rail Link lines.

Big plants moving into Water Street

We have two large pieces of plant machinery moving into our Water Street site this month. On 21 July, a 60t hydraulic rotary piling rig, the SR-40, is arriving from our Aotea Station construction site. The big rig is arriving in preparation for piling works that will be starting later this month. On the same day, a large hydraulic crawler crane will also arrive. It will be used to support the piling rig during piling activities.

Meet the team

This month we are introducing our Development Response Manager, Diana Veitch. Diana was born and raised in Brighton, England by her Kiwi parents before moving to Auckland in 2012.

In the past, Diana has worked on developing and delivering training and project management. During her time in New Zealand, Diana worked for Auckland Council and Auckland Transport before she joined the team at the Link Alliance.
At the Link Alliance, Diana is in charge of making sure we are being good neighbours by implementing practical interventions. This includes improving accessibility, making things better for pedestrians around our site boundaries and organising the designs that go on our fences.

When it comes to her favourite local spot, Diana says she loves too many places to pick just one however she admits has become a bit of a regular at Café Twenty Three as she loves their good coffee and salads.
In the weekend you’ll find Diana brunching at cafes, hanging out with friends or participating in outdoor activities – she recently tried zip lining on Waiheke Island!

At the Link Alliance, Diana is enjoying learning about construction and watching the changes happening on site.
