Happy Te Wiki o Te Reo Māori, this week we are celebrating Māori Language Week from the 13th - 19th of September 2021. 

Māori Language Week is a time to celebrate the first official language of Aotearoa. Te Reo is one of the many things that connects New Zealanders to Aotearoa, and unites us as a country.  

To celebrate Māori Language Week, we have created a special-edition newsletter with a few resources, stories, and activities that we would love to share with you.

Ngā Rauemi Tuhiono (Online Resources)

He rauemi maha ā Te Taura Whiri i te Reo Māori e kore noa e whakaako ana i te hītori o Te Reo, engari ka akiaki i te tangata ki te whakanui i Te Reo i ngā wāhi me ngā momo āhua katoa. 

Te Taura Whiri I Te Reo Māori are holding a Māori Language Moment for people all around New Zealand to engage in Te Reo. 

We want to share a few of their kapai ideas on how to participate:  

• Listen to podcasts like Taringa or Everday Māori to sharpen your reo. 
• Play our ‘Te Wiki o te Reo Māori’ playlist in your  workplace for everyone to hear.   

• Learn and use #MyMihi to introduce yourself to anyone new  
• Make ‘kia ora’ your first choice of greeting to everyone you speak to.   

• Practice your pronunciation and learn the Māori alphabet.  
• Join the ‘A Māori Phrase a Day’ learning group on Facebook by Hēmi Kelly. 

• Play a reo Māori Kahoot quiz for beginners! Host your own session for whānau or colleagues. 
• See Pania Papa’s video on easy Māori games to play with no equipment. 

• For beginners, try ‘Māori at Home’ ‘Māori 4 Work’ and ‘A Māori Phrase a Day.'  
• Use this signage list to put up signs around your workplace or try these labels.  

Waiata (Sing)

• Learn and sing the Māori alphabet. 
• Popular New Zealand hits have now been translated into te reo on Waiata Anthems.  

Ngohe Kimi Kupu (Word Find Activity)

Enjoy this word find activity for you and your whānau to complete. Find the kupu (word) related to what we wear on site.

Whakataetae (Competition)

 Building the CRL tunnels requires lots of materials, such as the heavy pre-cast concrete segments that form the tunnel lining. These can't be stored on the TBM and need to be imported from our construction site above ground. Moving the materials underground is a task for the project's three multi-services vehicles (MSV)!

A MSV is a strong vehicle that is specially built to drive through the CRL tunnels while they're being constructed. When we say a MSV is strong, we mean it! The largest CRL MSV can move up to 35 tonnes of equipment at any time. That's the same weight as six elephants.

The MSV play a key role in supporting the construction of the CRL tunnels, and using the inspiration of  Te Reo Language week we want to give one of our MSV a new name!  We would like to invite you to name one of our MSV in Te Reo Māori.

The winning entrant will win a $200 Sabato Voucher! Sabato is a local delicatessen with a delicious range of quality food and drinks. 

Entering is easy – just reply to this email by 5pm this coming Thursday 16th September with your suggested name. The only criteria is that it's a Te Reo Māori name, the name is not offensive, and you include a sentence or two about why you think it’s a winner. The winning name for one of our MSV will be announced on social media on Friday.

Ngā Ngohe Oranga Tuihono (Online Wellbeing Activities)

This week our virtual wellbeing activities of Guided Meditation and Meditative Art will have a Te Ao Māori focus.

Meditative Art will center around a whakataukī (Māori proverb), karakia (prayer), and different therapeutic art exercises to enhance our Taha Hinengaro. Make sure you have your pencils and paint brushes near you.

We will also be hosting our weekly Yoga Nidra class which will focus on a power-relaxation and meditation technique that induces deep body-mind relaxation, to increase self-awareness.

Kōrero hou mō ā mātou arapoka (Update on our Tunnels)

In our August monthly newsletter, we shared an update about our tunnels. We want to re share this update but in Te Reo.

Ngohe Karakara (Colouring in Activity)

Kua hangaia e mātou tētahi ngohe karakara hei pārekarekatanga mā ā mātou tamariki pakeke, nohinohi hoki.  Kei ia wāhanga o te pikitia o tā mātou wāhi hanganga tētahi nama, kimihia te kara e hāngai ana ki taua nama ka karakarahia.

We've created a colour by number activity for our big and little kids to enjoy. Each area of our construction site drawing has a number, find the colour that matches that number and colour it in.

Rapanga Kupu (Jargon Buster)

In last months newsletter, our Jargon Buster focused on the terms 'crown' and 'bench.' Here is our Jargon Buster translated in Te Reo.
