BUS: A new service is running for those who used the station
Western Line trains continue to run through the Maungawhau Station area- but no longer stop at the station platforms.
The four-year closure enables the Link Alliance to construct a modern new station building and the new double track rail tunnels.
Replacement bus service
Auckland Transport is running a new frequent bus route – the 64 –that connects Kingsland, Mt Eden and Newmarket for those who used that station.

Buses run every 15 minutes between 7am-7pm every day, connecting Kingsland, Mt Eden and Newmarket.
Outside of those hours, there will be buses running at a lower frequency but are designed to the connect to the Western Line train services.
Cost of bus service
One single trip on the 64 bus service will be one cent for everyone including concession holders (child, secondary, tertiary and accessible).
It will be free for SuperGold concession holders after 9am, and on weekends
It will be free for child concession holders on weekends and public holidays
If users are combining a trip on the 64 bus service with another bus or train trip, the 64 trip will be free and add no additional cost.
During the redevelopment, Western Line train timetables will continue to operate, but will not stop at Mt Eden station and there are some slight timetable changes.

The new station
Once it opens , the new station building will provide access to both the Western Line and the new City Rail Link (CRL) Line, which will run between Mt Eden and Waitematā Station (Britomart), via two new underground stations off Karangahape Road - Karanga-a-Hape Station (Karangahape) and Te Waihorotiu Station (Aotea) around Albert Street.
The new station will be a key part in unlocking Auckland’s public transport network and will enable urban development in Mt Eden and Uptown.
Auckland’s public transport users will be able to travel around the city, faster.
Why the station needed to close
Our priority is ensuring the safety of the travelling public and our construction team.
We can’t guarantee people’s safety by keeping the station open during construction.
If trains were to stop at the station, it would require people who use the station to enter a live and complex construction site.
As the station platform area is in a construction zone, the pedestrian access ramp from Mt Eden Road and crossing point between Ngahura and Fenton Streets also needed to close. The ramp will be demolished and the platform rebuilt and extended towards Mt Eden Road to provide for longer nine-car trains. The Ngahura to Fenton crossing will be replaced with a safer pedestrian and cycle overbridge.
The new CRL Line will have its own platform within the redeveloped station.
Running a single line
Two train lines ran through Mt Eden currently. This has reduced to one line during construction - called “Single Line Running” - between Dominion Road and Boston Road.
Running a single line through Mt Eden creates enough space for our work area while ensuring trains run on time across the wider network.

The new Maungawhau / Mount Eden Station
The new station will include a modern new building with an architecturally-designed interior and elevated views of Mount Eden/Maungawhau. With platforms for both Western and CRL Line services, Mt Eden will become a busy rail junction. The station is key to unlocking Auckland’s public transport network.
Once the CRL is in place, users will have:
More train services and travel options
Significant travel time savings to the city: three minutes to the new Karanga-a-Hape (Karangahape) Station, six minutes to the new Te Waihorotiu Station (Aotea) and nine minutes to the redeveloped Waitematā Station (Britomart)
The ability to travel directly between Mt Eden and South Auckland, avoiding the city altogether.
