Urgent work in the rail corridor
We need to undertake some urgent work in the rail corridor tonight in the areas indicated by the red dots below.
For each of these locations, a rail deflection monitoring target was installed during a recent block of line, when we were able to access the rail corridor. The targets are similar to those shown below.
As a train passes over the track at these points, a video recording is made to observe the movement of the targets under train loading.
This recording is analysed to estimate the deflection of the sleeper and the ground beneath, which then enables us to check some of the key track-form design parameters. We need to record a freight train, as these are heavier than a passenger train and for our purposes, the heavier the train loading the better. Freight trains run twice per day, one at around 2300 hrs and another around 0400 hrs. Given the times that these trains come through, we need to direct a light downwards onto the targets, at track level, when we take the video. We do not expect any noise or disruption from this work.
20 May 2021

Where possible, noise mats will be used to mitigate noise disruption.
Trail blasting
Where: In the rail corridor near Porters Avenue
Scope of work: We will be drilling approximately three to five small holes in which we will place small explosive charges for the purpose of monitoring the vibration during detonation. The purpose of this trial is to enable us to better understand how the rock will behave and the vibrational effects on the surrounding area.
If blasting is found to be viable, it may be a preferred option for next years trench work and will avoid long periods of rock breaking to remove the basalt.
Equipment: Hand tools
What to expect: Due to this work involving only small charges, it is unlikely that there will be any noticeable effects and if so, they will be fleeting. Special blasting mats will be placed over the charge site to minimise rising dust and prevent any spread of rock. Sensitive vibration monitors will also be placed in various locations around the site, so we can accurately assess and monitor the impacts of each individual blast on the surrounding area.
