An additional West-South connection will be built in Newmarket’s busy junction in advance of the City Rail Link opening.
City Rail Link work is about to start at Newmarket junction – also known as the Newmarket triangle. These works are being undertaken as part of wider network improvements to support a more reliable and resilient rail service when City Rail Link is operational.
Works will be delivered by contracting partners KiwiRail, and its suppliers, on behalf of City Rail Link Ltd. The works include the creation of a new connection between the Western Line to the Southern Line in the busy ‘triangle’ junction.
The new track layout will give more flexibility for rail operations and will also ensure trains can continue to run through Newmarket as redevelopment progresses in the coming years.
Once the City Rail Link is operational, these works will allow more trains to travel directly to south Auckland from West Auckland and vice versa.
Construction activities will happen mostly over weekends, and will be particularly busy over the extended Christmas block of lines (BOL).
All works are happening within the rail corridor with site access via Sarawia Street. Key activities include relocating services, installing new formation and slab track, installing new track sets, new overhead line and signalling equipment. Other works include moving the existing signals hut as well as building an additional emergency exit off Platform 4 and a new maintenance access.
What are we doing?
KiwiRail will be building an additional connection between Auckland’s Southern and Western Lines.
This work will be done in phases and involves:
building new track foundations
installing new overhead masts and tracks and new signalling systems
extending the platform emergency egress.
It will be completed in advance of the City Rail Link opening.
The first phase is to prepare the site for the main construction work.
KiwiRail will be establishing a construction site office and delivering materials to an area next to The Warehouse carpark. Access to the site office will be along KiwiRail’s maintenance road at the lower end of Sarawia Street.
Our working hours will generally be from 6.30am – 6.30pm.
What you can expect from these works
Our contractors, KiwiRail, are mindful of neighbours and will work hard to minimise any disturbance and get this essential work done as quickly and quietly as possible. However, this work may cause some disturbance with noise from machinery and vehicles moving around.
Much of our work can only be done when no trains are running. This means work will be done during weekends and public holidays. Most of the work will be done during the day however, as we have a lot to do in a short time, at times we may need to do minor quieter works at night.
Upcoming activities
Construction is planned over several public holiday dates when no trains will be running on the network.
KiwiRail will also be working on the tracks in mid- September, November and over the Christmas - New Year period.
In advance of these dates materials will be delivered ready for use and minor works will happen on site before and after.
