Latest Sustainability Report out now
From saving 693,000 litres of water in one year to cutting back on enough diesel to fuel more than 1,500 trips from Cape Reinga to Bluff – sustainability at the City Rail Link is full steam ahead.
In CRL’s fourth annual Sustainability Report, we highlight some of the project’s achievements as we work towards zero waste and reducing the project’s carbon footprint.
We also outline the work we’re doing to engage with the local community and achieve social outcomes for Tāmaki Makaurau.
Highlights from the past year include:
The Progressive Employment Programme, where six rangatahi (youth) were given the opportunity to work on the CRL project while being provided mentoring, pastoral care and training. This programme was resoundingly successful, with five of our six interns offered employment.
DSBJV, our construction partners for works around Britomart, installing a water reuse system which enabled water to be processed and reused on site rather than discharged into the sewer or stormwater system. This saved 693,000 litres of water in the past year – equivalent to four and a half Auckland households’ annual water consumption.
Using electricity sourced from the national grid rather than diesel generators to reduce the carbon footprint of the energy used. This avoided the use of over 274,000 litres of diesel, saving 624 tonnes of greenhouse gas emissions. That’s enough diesel to drive from Cape Reinga to the Bluff 1,545 times or the equivalent distance to the moon over nine times.
