Success at Ōtāhuhu Station over Christmas
Significant works at the Ōtāhuhu Station as part of the City Rail Link project were completed over the Christmas and New Year holiday period.
KiwiRail staff and contractors worked intensively for 17 days to install sleepers and rail between the platforms. In addition to a large section of new railway line, workers completed four rail crossovers, constructed signals and wired over-head electrical lines. At the same time, CRL’s contractor Libbet Ltd made excellent progress on building the station’s new third platform.
Over the Christmas break, the site was very busy with cranes delivering new rail track, diggers and trucks assisting with earthworks and ballast delivery and special trains testing the new track.
Ōtāhuhu Station’s upgrade is an important part of the project, says City Rail Link’s chief executive, Dr Sean Sweeney.
“When it opens in 2024, CRL will give Aucklanders a very different and improved rail service. There will be a lot more trains, and people will be able to travel direct between Ōtāhuhu in the south and Henderson out west much more easily,” Dr Sweeney says.
CRL work at Ōtāhuhu Station includes:
building a third platform at the stations
new gated entrance to the platform
new pedestrian overbridge between platforms
1.3 kilometres of new track
new crossovers to allow trains to safely switch between the new track and adjacent main line
new drains and track foundations
new signals and overhead lines.
