City Rail Link tunnel walks FAQs
How far is the walk?
The walk is about 600 metres. Participants walk 300m up one of the brand-new City Rail Link tunnels, before crossing into the other tunnel and retuning.
What is the route?
The tunnel walk begins at the Britomart Station, passes under the historic Chief Post Office building and the Commercial Bay Precinct, which is currently under construction and up to the lower end of Albert Street. Participants will then cross to the other tunnel and return. The cross passage is approximately under the road in front of the Quay West Hotel.
Can I bike to the event/will there be places to lock up my bicycle?
There will be free supervised bike valet parking nearby on the day. As well as bicycles, this facility can secure pushchairs, scooters and skateboards for you.
Can I cycle through the tunnels?
Unfortunately, due to the confined environment inside the tunnels, this is an experience for foot pedestrians and manual wheelchair users only. Bicycles would impact potential emergency evacuation processes, so no bicycles allowed. However, you can cycle to the event and leave your bike in our free, secure bike lock up facility.
What’s the best way to get there?
The tunnel walk starts at the Britomart Station, so we recommend catching a train, ferry or bus to the event. You can plan your journey using Auckland Transport’s journey planner, which can be found here. You can also cycle to the event and leave your bike at our free, secure bike lock up facility. If cycling or using public transport is unsuitable and you want to want to drive, please find Auckland Transport owned parking options here and Wilson parking options here.
What do I do if I’m running late?
Please allow extra travel time as the area will be busy. Your ticket is only valid for the allocated timeslot.
If I don’t have a ticket, can I just turn up?
The number of people that can be accommodated on site during each session is limited due to safety constraints, therefore every person requires a ticket and entry is strictly by ticket only.
Can I bring my baby/child to this event?
There is no age limit to this event. However please leave push-chairs/buggies at home, as these items have the potential to impact emergency evacuation procedures. As such these items will not be allowed into the tunnels. The walk is 600m, if your toddler is unable to cover this distance alone, please bring a baby carrier.
Does my child/baby need a ticket?
Every person requires a ticket, and entry is by ticket only. This includes babies and toddlers.
Can my child cycle/scooter alongside me as I walk the tunnel?
No pushchairs, buggies, scooters, cycles, skateboards, bikes or other wheel operated equipment allowed inside the tunnel.
Can I bring my dog?
No animals are allowed on site with the exception of assistance dogs.
Where is the allocated mobility parking?
There are various mobility parks around the city, click here for council owned mobility parks.
I’m a wheelchair user? Can I come to the event?
Manual wheelchair users can access the event. Wheel chair users or those with special access needs can use the lifts to get from the Britomart Station ground level, down to the train platform level. A ramp will also be available to access the tunnels from platform level. Battery powered wheelchairs cannot enter the tunnel due to safety issues around lithium batteries. Manual wheelchairs will be available on site if required.
Where can I park my car?
Paid-for car parking is available in the city centre. However, why not leave the car at home and take public transport? You can plan your journey here. Please find Auckland Transport-owned parking options here and Wilson parking options here.
