City Rail Link salvage boosts rebuild on cyclone-battered Tonga
Containers packed to the brim with furniture and materials salvaged as part of City Rail Link works will be shipped to Tonga next month where they will be re-used to help rebuild cyclone-battered communities.
The items - such as cupboards, desks, shelving, tables, doors, benches, toilets, drawers, ceiling panels and carpet tiles - were recently stripped from CRL buildings being demolished near the Mt Eden Station.
The salvage was front-footed by CRL subcontractor TROW. The company’s general manager Sai’a Latu said the items will go towards fitting out a church in one village and giving children a decent classroom in another.
“Not so long ago a lot of the salvaged material, at least 40 percent of all construction waste, would have been trucked off to the nearest dump as waste. That’s an industry image we want to help change,“ said Latu.
CRL says it is delighted the material will get a useful new lease of life.
“It ticks a lot of boxes for the project and the ambitious sustainability goals we have that include avoiding unnecessary waste,” says CRL Sustainability Manager Liz Root.
“A project the size and significance of ours has a responsibility for sustainability issues like waste avoidance and we aim to be an exemplar – a model - for the country.”
