Kids artwork in station update

During the first Covid-19 nationwide lockdown in 2020, City Rail Link made a call out to the tamariki (children) of New Zealand to send in their artwork showing where they would travel if the CRL tunnels could take them anywhere, real or imagined. The call saw Kiwi kids from hundred of schools across the country share their masterpieces.

The young artists who contributed will see their creations printed onto ceramic tiles and placed pepermanently on a wall inside Te Waihorotiu Station (Aotea) – which will be the country’s busiest station.

This month, we spoke to CRL Lead Graphic Designer Geoff Fitzpatrick and Interface Design Manager Simon Lough to find out what has been happening since the call out was originally made.

Once submissions closed, the next step for Geoff was to manually process and render 3100 pieces of art. A sample piece of the art tile wall (held by Simon in the video) was then created.  All 21 wall panels are now being manufactured in Singapore and are expected to be back in the country by the end of the year.
