On track at Waitematā Station (Britomart)
We had some exciting developments in the completed twin tunnel boxes between Waitematā Station (Britomart) and lower Albert St this month.
The beginning of the month saw our workers mark the start of the fitout works (laying the tracks and installing the rail systems) for City Rail Link (CRL) with the removal of the buffer stop at the end of platform 1.
The first stage of laying the track involved hauling the required materials into the tunnel by rail at night from Quay Park Yard.
Now the team have begun the next step of laying the blocks. Our contractors, Link Alliance, are installing a low vibration track (LVT) system rather than sleeper blocks which are typically seen on ballast. This means when CRL goes live, you will experience an enhanced smooth ride as you travel on the new railway lines.
Once the LVT blocks are laid and aligned, concrete will be poured. Pouring the track will start in early September and take 2-3 weeks.
The team will be working over the next year and a half to lay the tracks and put in place the systems required to transform Waitematā Station (Britomart) from a dead-end stop, into a two way through station.
Once CRL is complete, commuters will arrive at platform 1 after travelling from Te Waihorotiu Station (Aotea).
