Connecting Mt Eden one bridge at a time

Normanby Road Bridge opens

The Maungawhau/Mount Eden Station team worked day and night in the lead up to the Normanby Road Bridge opening before Christmas, on 22 December 2022.

The new road bridge replaces the level crossing that closed in June 2021. The bridge provides a safer connection between Normanby Road and Boston Road for all modes of travel, including cyclists and scooterists, vehicles, pedestrians and accessible users.

Ahead of the bridge opening, our mana whenua partners delivered a karakia and our main contractors, the Link Alliance, provided celebratory kawhe (coffee) to project neighbours.

Fenton Street Bridge installation

In other bridge-related news, over the 2022 Christmas break the team also installed the Fenton Street bridge span surrounding Maungawhau/Mount Eden Station.

A 500-tonne crawler crane lifted the 86-metre-long bridge into place, with a single lift from Ngahura Street, Eden Terrace.

The Fenton Street Bridge is a pedestrian bridge that crosses the Western Line platform, connecting Fenton and Ngahura Streets. The new bridge, with lifts on both sides, will replace the previous level crossing and provide a safer and more accessible route for pedestrians and cyclists.

Once open, the elevated views will connect users with the closest and most significant geographical feature of the area – the volcanic cone Maungawhau (Mount Eden).

Check out the video above to see how our teams made it happen.
