What's happening at Waitematā Station (Britomart)?
We are busy working in and around Waitematā Station (Britomart), in downtown Auckland, to prepare the station for when the City Rail Link (CRL) opens. Once complete the station will be transformed from a dead-end stop, into a two-way through station providing a direct link between downtown Auckland and Mt Eden.
The works include:
Tunnel fitout works in the CRL tunnels running from Waitematā Station (Britomart) to Te Wai Horotiu Station (Aotea)
Reconfiguring and constructing underground equipment and station ‘back of house’ facilities rooms
Installation of a smoke curtain by the main escalators as part of the fire emergency system
Raising and modifying the station concourse to accommodate 9-carriage trains
This month (see video above) we spoke to Link Alliance Project Engineer Thomas Guerreiro to find out more about what is happening in the station.
The below diagram of Waitematā Station (Britomart) shows what the station’s platform layout will look like once the project is complete. When CRL opens, the two outer tracks – those at platform 1 and platform 5 will continue into the new CRL line.
Trains will arrive at Waitematā Station (Britomart) from what will be New Zealand’s busiest train station - Te Wai Horotiu Station (Aotea) – at platform 1.
Trains will run in an opposite direction at platform 5 – and continue on to Te Wai Horotiu Station (Aotea).
Platforms 3 and 4 will continue as terminating stops where the trains will come into and reverse out of the station and lastly.
Platform 2 will be discontinued.
A construction support area is currently operating on Tyler Street to aid Link Alliances’ works, however these works a kept to a minimum. You can find out more information about Waitematā Station (Britomart) works and sign up to the newsletter by visiting the Waitematā Station (Britomart) section of our website.
CRL works do not include the shrink wrapping and scaffolding on the front of the Chief Post Office building on Te Komititanga. These façade works are being completed by Auckland Transport and are essential to clean and restore the stonework, windows and exterior of the 100-year-old heritage listed building, which houses the station.
