Native Trees Planted Along Albert Street

The planting of native trees along Albert Street this month has given city dwellers a glimpse at what the City Rail Link footprint will look like after the project is finished.

On June 8, Auckland Mayor Phil Goff and City Rail Link Chief Executive Dr Sean Sweeney teamed up with a number of people to plant a pohutukawa – the first of 23 mature native trees that will line a new-look Albert Street between the Wyndham and Customs Street intersections. 

Other trees include tōtara, golden tōtara, pōhutukawa, black maire and puriri.

It’s all part of the plan to not only leave Auckland with a world-class underground railway, but also to leave the surrounding areas greener and more beautiful than when the project started.

Albert Street’s restoration follows construction of twin rail tunnels below the surface of the road – one of the first programmes of CRL works.

Other improvements to Albert Street include wider footpaths, new lighting and street furniture, open spaces, improvements for cyclists and dedicated bus bays to support public transport at road level.
