Tower Cranes Need Names Too

Aotea Station’s tower crane has this month been named George.

In the footsteps of a naming competition that chose Dame Whina Cooper as the name for our tunnel boring machine – two more machines integral to the project are going through their own public naming process.

Aotea Station’s tower crane has this month been named George – and ode to the heavy lifting and hard work it will be put to in the coming years.

The original Greek form of this name, Georgios, is based on the Greek word "georgos", which means "farmer".  The word georgos itself is ultimately a combination of two Greek words, "ge", meaning earth or soil, and "ergon", which means "work".

The Aotea Station team thanked everyone who submitted a name for the competition.

The tower crane at the Mt Eden site is also in the final stage of its own naming competition – with entries closing 30 November 2020.  

The Mt Eden team said their crane will play a very important role in the construction of the CRL tunnels, so it is fitting it is given a strong name.
