Aotea Station construction in full swing

Aotea is set to be the country’s busiest rail station.

There’s so much progress bubbling away across all areas of the City Rail Link and one of the busiest places is Aotea Station, which has celebrated some great milestones this month.

Link Alliance construction crews finished their first roof slab pour, and the station’s information drop-in centre has arrived and is being fitted out to help keep Aucklanders up to date with our work.  

First station roof slab pour

On Thursday, 17 September, the Aotea team completed the first roof slab structure for the station under the Wellesley St intersection with Albert Street and Mayoral Drive.

This section of roof was constructed across two of the first diaphragm wall (d-wall) panels which run vertically about 20m deep underground. The pour required 185 cubic metres of concrete from 35 concrete trucks.

This method of construction is known as top-down construction, where the walls and roof of a structure is made first, then ground material is excavated from beneath. This way of building allows us to construct the station more quickly, and with less inconvenience at street level.     

Project information centre arrives 

A 20 ft container that will be used as a drop-in centre, with information about Aotea Station and the City Rail Link project, is now on site and is being fitted out before it opens next month. The drop-in centre will first be located near our neighbours and friends, Mojo Bledisloe at 24 Wellesley Street West  – opposite Elliot Street.   

Next year it will be moved closer to the Victoria/Albert St intersection when we close that intersection and re-open Wellesley St West.

The around the container will be a welcome development to bring together the community and give the city centre a new green space.

The Aotea Station, behind the Aotea Square in the city centre, is destined to be New Zealand’s busiest train station.
