Taken below Albert Street, from the concourse level looking down to the future station platform that is under construction  - trains will run to both sides of the platform.

Kia ora,

It has been a huge month at Te Waihorotiu Station as we push to complete all excavation of dirt from the underground area. Watch this space - we are literally just a few truckloads away from hitting this major milestone!

Thank you to those who attended yesterday's Community Liaison Group (CLG) meeting, held at Mexican Cafe (67 Victoria St West). You can read the minutes and presentation here when they are uploaded in the coming few days. A reminder that tomorrow is the last day to complete our quarterly community survey.

Also this month, City Rail Link Ltd’s 2022 Annual Report was tabled in Parliament and published on the CRL website here. This is a great document to look at if you are interested in the "big picture" of the CRL and its progress.

Get into the swing of the holiday season during December with an incredible range of festive events, attractions and live on-street performers in the city centre. Read more at Heart of the City website

As always, to contact us here at Te Waihorotiu Station you can email us at: aotea@linkalliance.co.nz or call 0800 CRL TALK (0800 275 8255 and press option 3) to speak to us.

Kind regards,

The Te Waihorotiu Station team

Kids art comes to Te Waihorotiu Station

During the first Covid-19 nationwide lockdown in 2020, City Rail Link made a call out to the tamariki (children) of New Zealand to send in their artwork showing where they would travel if the CRL tunnels could take them anywhere. The artwork will be placed permanently onto ceramic tiles inside Te Waihorotiu Station, just below Victoria Street.

We have installed some of this kids artwork on the hoardings near 62 Victoria Street West - come in and see if you can find your artwork while also looking at the entrance structure to the station through our perspex windows.

Faces of Te Waihorotiu Station:
Rexon Candor

Hundreds of us come to work each day at Te Waihorotiu Station and we all have a story to tell. Each month we aim to profile some of our crew. This month we turn the spotlight on Rexon Candor, Leading Hand Scaffolder.

Community and business support

As the underground station concrete structure nears completion, we have been taking some of our small business neighbours on special underground tours as a sign of our appreciation for their patience during construction and also to show them the huge progress being made - often right below their shop doorsteps!

Pictured here are owners of City Photo (47 Victoria Street West) who have been operating for almost 30 years, and a local favourite Belgar Barbers (27 Victoria St West) - smiling with some of our underground crew.

You could also win an underground tour of Te Waihorotiu Station for you and a friend/whānau member as well as monthly chances to win a $100 voucher to spend locally. To enter, spend a minimum $5 at a participating business, fill in the entry form with the receipt and drop into the entry box provided there. Good luck - you could be our next winner!

Sarah Jane is the latest winner of the grand prize underground tour! Here she is pictured with John from Little Albert Coffee (83 Albert St), where she put in the winning entry form.
The 2022 round of the Link Alliance Small Business Support Programme (SBSP) closed last month, supporting local businesses with free and independent business advice alongside $3000 microgrants. Check out Belgar Barbers (27 Victoria St West) and their fantastic new product line and neon sign which was made possible with the SBSP. A great Christmas gift idea for adults and kids - these can also be ordered online here.  The SBSP will continue again in 2023 - watch this space.

As a token of thanks, this month Link Alliance sponsored free icecream for our community and site workers outside our Te Pūkaki Public Information Centre.
Yesterday's CLG hosted by the fantastic Mexican Cafe (67 Victoria St West) was a very full house with a presentation on the streetscape construction package beginning next year.

Te Waihorotiu Station construction progress

Here's the latest drone footage from above the Te Waihorotiu Station construction site.
South Zone - Mayoral Drive area
  • Concrete façade "sky" and "earth" element panels continue to be installed on the Wellesley Street entrance building (superstructure). Next year louvres and shingles will be installed on top of the dark concrete panels (representing the tears of Ranginui).
  • Underground, internal blockwork wall install is complete, and plasterboard partition wall fit out is progressing nicely.
  • We are also making good progress continuing to install over-track ventilation ducting, and track/platform concrete structures.
This month Auckland Mayor Wayne Brown toured all City Rail Link construction sites, including Te Waihorotiu Station - pictured here in our south zone near the two bored tunnels linking Karanga-a-hape Station and Maungawhau / Mount Eden Station.
Back-of-house station rooms and facilities - internal blockwork is complete and plasterboard fit-out well underway.
Concrete façade "sky" and "earth" element panels almost complete on the superstructure
Central Zone - Albert Street from Wellesley to Victoria
  • It won't be long to go until all main station excavation below Albert Street is complete. Follow our social media channels to hear the latest.
  • The handover process of the B1 concourse level for rail systems team fit-out works (beginning with cable tray installation) has begun.
  • On the lower level, platform construction is well underway.
Only a few digger buckets to go before excavation of the main station is complete. Excavation is achieved using our telescopic excavator located at surface level (see its bucket in the far centre).
Can you see the platform?  This is where passengers will board their trains.
How many ducts does it take to run a train station? Our rail systems team is now fully onboard installing power and communication ducts.
Victoria Street Zone - from Federal to Elliott
  • This month we have fully connected our second Victoria Street entrance (near the Sky Tower) into the main station, meaning all three station entrances are now connected to the underground structure.
  • Lift shafts have already been installed, with the roof, glass and other above-ground materials set to be installed in the coming months.
  • Below ground, fit-out of a plant room servicing this area of the station has begun.
Above ground, our Victoria Street entrance near the Sky Tower is rapidly taking shape. This entrance will house escalators and lifts to take passengers down into the station concourse and train platforms.

A giant stormwater dropper pipe runs through Te Waihorotiu Station just beneath Victoria Street.
North Zone - Albert Street from Victoria to Wyndham
  • Extension of the running tunnel boxes south from Wyndham Street is not far from completion. The outer walls are complete, with just a few central walls to go. The roof structure for the tunnels is also progressing rapidly.
  • Work here is essentially connecting into the existing "C2" running tunnels from Waitematā Station (Britomart), linking into the Te Waihorotiu Station concourse and platform structure.
  • Train track infrastructure continues to be laid in these tunnels.
Looking towards Waitematā Station. You can see the progress made on the central walls of the running tunnels, which are only a few panels away from being fully connected.

Midtown regeneration steps up a gear

While we continue to build Te Waihorotiu Station, the Auckland Council whānau have a programme underway to regenerate the surrounding area and get ready for the thousands of people who will use the station daily.

Midtown will become one of the most exciting parts of the city centre, with Victoria Street and the Wellesley Street Bus Interchange as key part of its regeneration. Te Hā Noa Victoria Street will become a place to pause, take a breath, and sit in the cool shade of our growing ngahere.

To prepare for this next phase of construction on Victoria Street, utility companies Vector and Watercare will undertake early works in late December/early January. Auckland Council will then start streetscape work between Elliott Street and Queen Street in March 2023 - this work is being coordinated with the Link Alliance streetscape programme (also beginning early 2023).

Subscribe here for the latest information about the midtown regeneration programme and Te Hā Noa construction. To view the latest Te Hā Noa plans visit here. And read our new brochure here for more detailed information.
