COVID19 - Alert Level 3 information

As of 6.00am on Sunday morning, Auckland moved to Alert Level 3 due to the increased risk of COVID-19 in the community. During this alert level, construction activity across our three sites – Aotea, Karangahape and Mt Eden – will continue, with strict guidelines in place.

Our immediate priority is ensuring the safety of our people and the wider community. We have reimplemented the strict health and hygiene protocols we used when previously working during Alert Level 3 including physical distancing and personal protective equipment (PPE) such as masks.

Please stay in your bubble and, if you are walking around our construction sites, continue to follow physical distancing rules and follow instructions provided by our team and on construction signage.

It is our priority to keep our community updated during this period. Under alert level 3 we are now unable to meet face-to-face, but we have many other channels to keep everyone informed.

If you wish to contact us please email us at: Karangahape@linkalliance.co.nz or call 0800 CRL TALK (0800 275 8255 and press option 4) to speak to us.

Steal fixing at Mercury Lane

Mega milestone

A major milestone for Karangahape Station has recently been accomplished. The Diaphragm wall construction in Beresford Square has finished with the final panel of 30 poured on Friday 12 February, meaning that the walls for both station boxes are now complete.

Across the two station entrances a total of 56 panels are now installed. This means saying goodbye to the bentonite plant, hydrofraise cutter, grab rig and crane which will make way and space for the next stage of works. The bentonite plant, which is modular, has be broken up, with parts going to Mt Eden Station, Aotea Station, France and Singapore.

The focus has now turned to building the ‘L0 slab’, which is the 900mm thick street-level roof to the underground station.

The pictures below show the transformation of Beresford Square over a week following completion of the D-walls as preparations are made for the L0 slab. The layer of concrete recently poured is known as ‘blinding’ and is not part of the slab. Blinding creates a working platform and lay-down area for the steel reinforcing cages and will be removed as part of the excavation for the floor below. It also acts as formwork for the slab ensuring that the finish is smooth.

This 'L0 slab' stage of work is much further along at Mercury Lane, where steel fixing and concrete pouring has been taking place for a number of weeks. The opening photos show the large number of workers involved and the huge amount of steel being placed within the ground floor entrance to the station. In the coming weeks the final two pours for the entrance slab will take place at Mercury Lane and the dig beneath the slab will begin!

Pride Month

Link Alliance were recently proud sponsors of a panel discussion at Monster Valley as part of Pride Month and Karangahape Hour Pride Special.

The event held on Thursday 25 February involved a video screening and panel discussion exploring the colourful, outrageous and deeply personal connections that have made Karangahape Road a cultural and spiritual home for Tāmaki Makaurau Auckland’s rainbow communities across the generations.

The evening featured a series of candid video interviews with takatāpui, queer and gender diverse folk who have lived and worked on Karangahape Road from the 1970s until the present day – and was followed by a moderated discussion that delved into the queer whakapapa, true stories and urban legends that have carved out a unique place for K’ Road in the heart of Aotearoa New Zealand’s rainbow communities.

Supporting our neighbours

With many talented personnel on site, whenever possible we lend a hand to our neighbours to support their projects which could use the skill of our workers.

To help support the KBA we recently we aided with the installation of the Chinese red lanterns you see glowing from the awnings along Karangahape Road in celebration the of Chinese New Year, which began on February 12 and welcomed in the year of the Ox.

Upcycling to art

Cut offs from Karangahape construction site have been given a new lease of life over at the Mt Eden Station as a piece of art to cover the station’s hoarding.

Local father and son artistic team Piet and Jan Ubels built the sculptural relief wall in the form of a timber ‘stained glass window’ onto the Shaddock St hoarding as part of the CRL Link Alliance artwork programme around their construction sites. The tessellated timber sections incorporates a few key repeating motifs overlaid with a narrative of the local area’s history. Click on the image above to watch Jan and Piet install and talk about their favourite aspects of the piece.

Not just a story of creativity but one of sustainability. The Link Alliance have major sustainability objectives and are always looking into innovative ways to meet these goals.  If you want to read more about the major sustainability goals and initiatives of the City Rail Link project check out our website here.
