As progress continues underground there is still lots to engage with and see surrounding our site. From new art, to music and markets on Beresford Square, Karangahape Station is a hive of activity.

In case you missed it, photos from construction can be seen in the monthly update here.

As always if you have any questions or wish to contact us please email Karangahape@linkalliance.co.nz or call 0800 CRL TALK (0800 275 8255 and press option 4).

The art installation continues

When walking down Mercury Lane towards Canada Street you will notice the latest instalment of art along the hoardings of our construction site. Artist, Margarita Vovna has created a mesmerising piece, 20 metres long, that pays homage through its imagery and design to the Karangahape area.

Thematically the concept addresses the heritage of the iconic Mercury Plaza and New Gum Sarn supermarket and the owners, the Ng family who opened their fruit and vege shop in 1960 just around the corner from Karangahape Road. At the time there were many Chinese owned produce stores in the precinct.

The female figures are a tribute to the NZPC, located across the road from the piece, and the advocacy work they have been engaged in since 1987. You will even spot a vintage train noting the repurposing of the site for the Karangahape Station.

First Thursdays – Dance for Dessert

The successful First Thursdays continue through the winter months with the next one fast approaching on Thursday 5 August. This one ties into the city-wide Restaurant Month and will incorporate food as the primary theme.  Pie Piper and The Caker will have stalls for those with a sweet tooth along with a miso stall for those looking for some hearty winter food to stay warm while browsing the many fabulous and creative stalls set up around Beresford Square, all to the backdrop of music and dancers performing at the psychedelic pocket park.

Line up:
4-9pm — Karangahape Market
5-9pm — DJ @faber_morrow & DJ TBA
6-8pm — En Beat Dance Academy featuring its Waacking Babies, and a trio of House Dancers to get the party started.
9pm - late — After Party at Whammy.
Monster Valley's 10th Birthday
Naked PR's brilliant First Thursdays After Party at Whammy

The station seen from the sky

Check out the latest drone footage of our Karangahape Station which shows work advancing across both sites - Mercury Lane and Beresford Square in June.

At Mercury Lane, you can see spoil from the excavation of the B2 level being loaded into trucks for disposal at a clean fill site. The opening in the middle (where the excavator is working) is where the escalator for the station will be.

Over on Beresford Square, the long yellow ducting is supplying a constant stream of fresh air underground. The white cross steel section is to support a temporary bridge deck (now fully built) which allows site trucks to pass through the square, be loaded with spoil and then exit onto Pitt Street. Again, the opening the excavator is working in is for the station's escalator.

Merge Café feeding our lads

Always looking to support local businesses our team try to get catering for any events from those on Karangahape Road. This month we are delighted to pair up with Merge Café, who will be catering a BBQ for the team on site to mark the hard work they have been putting in to keep the project on time.

Merge, an off-shoot of Lifewise, plays a crucial role in supporting Auckland’s street whānau and those experiencing homelessness. They break down societal barriers and offer a warm, safe and supportive space where anyone is welcome.

If you want to support the important work they do and get a nice lunch at the same time they offer a pay it forward system. For just $10 you can get a delicious meal while contributing to a free meal for someone in need.

Steel fixing

Steel fixing positions and secures steel reinforcing bars, also known as reo or rebar, to reinforce concrete. The work involves following engineering drawings that detail the type of bar and the spacing used. This work is done for each of the station's floor before the concrete is poured.
