Beresford Square
- Utility diversions, involving excavation in the footpath and road continue until May. All utility diversions are scheduled to be completed by June.

- We will continue to set up our construction support area, which includes offices and facilities at 15-27 Beresford Square.

40+ sheet piles and counting….
We covered the start to sheet piling for the temporary access shaft at Mercury Lane in February’s newsletter. This work is now well underway with more than half of the 92 sheet piles (at the time of writing) installed in a semi-circle. The team are expecting to be finished in mid-March.
If you walk near the site, you’ll see the large red ‘crawler crane’ carefully lining the sheets up in a frame before they are vibrated into the ground.
Vibrations from sheet piling can sometimes be felt in nearby buildings so we have been undertaking additional monitoring to make sure we stay well within our consented vibration limits. A big thank you to everyone for your patience while this work is underway.
Why vibrated sheet piles?
The land above the temporary access shaft will be returned to the owners after construction, with the steel sheet piles removed once the station is built so the land can be developed. It’s also less disruptive than driven piles and the sustainable approach, as the piles will be reused.

Fairy lights brighten Beresford Square
If you’re around Beresford Square in the evening, you’ll no doubt notice the additional light and twinkles under the canopies.
We’ve installed fairy and festoon lighting on the northern side of the square with the same sparkling treatment scheduled for the southern side over the next couple of weeks.
It’s all part of a project to make the square lighter, brighter and more inviting. Watch out for ‘stage two’ later in the project – an artistic installation designed to entice people through the square as we build the new Karangahape Station.

Local business ‘Def Store’ moves to Beresford Square
New Zealand’s premium skate and apparel shop, Def Store has just moved to Beresford Square with a successful opening party on 5 March!
Def Store sells clothes, jewellery, skateboards, shoes, hats and much, much more.
While sad to leave their current location in Pitt Street where they have been for the past four years, store owner Chey is excited about the move.
“Beresford Square is a fantastic location with a great feel. We’re really looking forward to being part of the family there,” he says.
Def Store joins an eclectic mix of shops and businesses in the Square, including Johnny Feedback, Northern Line Bar & Social, Barretta Espresso, Vada Hair, Centurian Sauna and more.

Meet the team – Melissa Lu
This month we are introducing our Site Engineer at Mercury Lane construction site – Melissa Lu.
What does your job involve?
I help manage the building of what has been designed. This includes managing subcontractors, doing quality checks on site and tracking day to day costs.
Where did you grow up?
I was born, raised and studied in Auckland.
Where were you working prior to this?
Before working on CRL I was still with Downer but on the Lincoln to Westgate Project. Before that I was with Beca and worked as a civil structural engineer.
What do you do when you are not working?
I’ve been training in Brazilian jiu jitsu for two years and kickboxing for 10 years now, doing a few competitions a year. When not working or training I try and travel as much as possible.
Any fun facts you want to share?
I competed in my first big comp at 18 for the under 55kg NZ kickboxing title!

Advertise your business to CRL workers
At the height of construction approximately 300 people are going to be working on the Karangahape Station site so naturally we’re encouraging them to shop local and explore all our neighbouring communities have to offer. That’s why we have set up a trader directory to promote the many diverse eateries, services, entertainment and shopping that’s available throughout the project corridor.
If you’d like to be included in the Karangahape trader directory, please email traders@cityraillink.govt.nz.
Or click on the website for more details: trader-directory-karangahape
