Trees Bloom for Christmas
Dozens of native trees planted in the footprint of the City Rail Link works in the City Centre are settling in well to their new habitats.
All five pōhutukawa planted in Te Komititanga, Auckland’s newest civic space in Lower Queen Street, flowered in December – living up to their reputation as New Zealand’s very own Christmas tree.
The string of mature native trees on the lower half of Albert Street have also flourished, said Howell Davies, Auckland Council Senior Advisor Urban Forest.
“All of them are doing well, some have even had new growth showing the trees are going into their growing season.”
Twenty-three mature native trees in total were transplanted to line the new-look Albert Street, between the Wyndham and Customs Street intersections. These included totara, golden totara, pōhutukawa, black marie and puriri.
“Initial signs show that the move has been successful” says Howell. “The next 6-12 months are critical to the trees establishment and the early signs of new growth indicate the trees are starting to settle into their new locations.”
He has, however, noted a few broken branches adding that the main thing that people can do is respect the fact that they are new. “We prefer that people look and admire these trees from afar - not touch”.
