Ōtāhuhu footbridge installation

A new overbridge has been created at the Ōtāhuhu Station as part of City Rail Link (CRL) works.

The footbridge connects the central platform with the newly extended third platform and was installed in just seven hours overnight on 19 July 2020.

The construction crew said the scale, extent and complexity of the installation would normally require a weekend closure of the line, however thanks to very careful planning, it was able to be completed in one night.

CRL’s contractor Libbet was responsible for the installation of the new footbridge and associated stairs, and KiwiRail’s contractor Alpha Rail, managed all aspects of the overhead works.

Scott Elwarth, CRL Head of Delivery said, “This was a challenging task requiring stringent health and safety measures to be in place, it was carried out successfully while maintaining Southern Line rail operation.”

As well as building a world-class underground railway in the heart of Auckland City, CRL is also delivering improvements to the wider rail network, such as the Strand in Parnell, Ōtāhuhu, Henderson and Newmarket.

The Ōtāhuhu Station is being expanded to three platforms to handle extra services when CRL is completed.
