Breakthrough into C2 - Hello From the Other Side
This time, two years ago, our Walk the Tunnels event marked the completion of the 600-metre-long twin-tunnels running from Britomart, beneath Commercial Bay, and up Albert St to where Aotea Station is being constructed today. This month, the Aotea Station team made the first cut into the section where these tunnels end, about 7m beneath Albert Street at the intersection with Wyndham Street.
Over the coming few weeks, the team will be fully exposing the 30cm thick temporary “plug” wall in place at the tunnels’ end, connecting Aotea Station with the existing tunnels.
The first stage of this process has been to core a small hole into the wall to test airflows and then use a concrete breaker to create a larger hole for limited access. Once further excavations have taken place to around 15 metres below Albert Street, the remaining sections of the wall will be removed.
We’ll be regularly updating this exciting process on our social media channels – Facebook, Instagram and LinkedIn – so be sure to follow us for updates!
Once complete it will unlock the work programme for tunnel, track, and systems fitout, which will ultimately convert Britomart Station from a one-way dead-end terminus to a two-way through station.
