Pocket Park wins Kūmara Award

Congratulations to the Link Alliance Karangahape Station team, for receiving a Kūmara Award under the ‘Beyond the Brief’ category for creating Pocket Park, an open-air stage for local performers.

Pocket Park functions dually as a space to showcase the talents of the creative community while also enhancing the construction border of Karangahape Station. In fitting with the wider K-rd community, the stage is often used for drag queen performances and celebration. Pocket park is open to the public to be used at their convenience and you can find out details about how to book it here, or if the stage is unoccupied, anyone is welcome to rock up and perform until their hearts content.

Run by Placemaking Aotearoa, the annual Kūmara Awards strive to celebrate all types of fabulous placemaking happening across Aotearoa – big or small, temporary or permanent. Our contractors were honoured with the a ‘Beyond the Brief’ category award for activating the Karangahape Station construction edge into a vibrant place that showcases the vast talents in the community, supports local businesses and builds connection that uplift both people and place.

During the first half of the year, pre-Covid-19 restrictions, organised performances were being held at Pocket Park as part of First Thursday’s on Karangahape Road – a monthly market and music extravaganza.

Well done to everyone involved in the design, building, and running of Pocket Park events including Karangahape Road Business Association, The Warren, The Open Fort, Shelley Botticelli and Monster Valley.
