Paving the way for sustainable infrastructure

In many ways the project aims to achieve sustainability excellence, and major part of this is being careful with the resources we use and avoiding waste where possible. The Maungawhau/Mount Eden Station team identified an opportunity to reuse the basalt unearthed during construction and incorporate it into the streetscape around the station.

Our main contractor, Link Alliance are working with Stone Living Company to fabricate pavers using excavated basalt from the rocks found on the construction site. It is a big win for sustainability as the pavers were originally to be sourced from overseas. Watch the video above to learn more about process.

Using basalt taken from site for urban realm is also a way to respect history and whenua (land) and creates connection by returning the excavated material only metres away from where it was taken. Basalt rock is a significant geological feature of the Mt Eden area. It came from an eruption of Maungawhau (Mount Eden) approximately 15,000 years ago, shaping the landscape of the area.
