This page detailed the work in Lower Queen Street and around the Waitematā Station (Britomart) - the former Chief Post Office.

Final notification

16 May 2021

This is the final newsletter for the CRL Britomart works being undertaken by Downer Soletanche Bachy Joint Venture (DSBJV) as our construction work is now almost over.

Over the past five years we built the section of twin tunnels beneath Lower Queen Street, constructed Te Komititanga, the beautiful new civic space formerly known as Lower Queen Street, and rebuilt the Chief Post Office (CPO) ground floor, reconstructed the new station entrance area, the station public toilets, and back of house service and staff rooms.

Tyler and Galway Street are functionally complete with minor finishing works to close out.* We will continue to be working within the Temporary Station Building at the rear of the CPO building to decommission temporary works and reconstruct the curved blue stone walls. This is expected to continue through until September 2021. The majority of these works will be contained within the building with minimal impact on the public.

We will continue to notify affected stakeholders of disruptive works.

The remaining sections of Tyler and Galway Street will be completed at a later date. CRL will notify impacted parties of these details once confirmed.

Urban Realm

Programmed completion May 2021

The Urban Realm streetscape upgrades along Tyler and Galway Streets is now functionally complete – this includes the upgrade of the 152 Quay Street outdoor carpark.

Due to external projects currently underway on both streets, the remaining sections still to be upgraded on each street will be completed by CRL contractors at a later date, but will not be undertaken by DSBJV.

  • Te Komititanga was officially opened in December 2020, with minor paving finishing works still underway.

  • Galway Street is functionally complete with minor finishing works still underway. These will be complete end of May.

  • Tyler Street is functionally complete with minor finishing works still underway. These will be complete end of May.

  • The 152 Quay carpark on Tyler Street is complete with minor finishing works underway.

Temporary Station Building

Programmed completion September 2021

We are currently undertaking the partial internal demolition and decommissioning of the temporary station building behind the CPO; this is to prepare it for a new fit out as part of the next stage of City Rail Link works. The building structure will remain in place at the completion of our works in September 2021 as it will be used as a site office for upcoming CRL Link Alliance works in the Britomart area.

The majority of these works will be contained within this temporary Station Building and behind our site hoardings on Tyler and Galway Street with minimal impact on the public.

We will continue to notify affected stakeholders of any disruptive works.

  • The CPO Building re-opened as Britomart Station in April 2021.

  • The partial internal demolition of the temporary Station Building is programmed to be completed in September 2021.

  • The temporary building will remain in place at the completion of DSBJV works as a construction support area for the next section of CRL works.
